Many Nassau residents say they are not holding their breath as a political argument holds up further savings at the gas pump.
State legislators recently passed a bill capping the sales tax on gasoline at $2 a gallon, a move expected to drop the price about 4 cents a gallon. Some minority Nassau Republicans are now calling for a cap on the county sales tax.
Legislator David Mejias (D-North Massapequa) says a cap could cost the county $14 to $16 million annually and property taxes would have to be raised to cover the lost income. Minority Leader Peter Schmitt (R-Massapequa) says the cap will be affordable if the county reduces spending. Nassau Executive Tom Suozzi says he is investigating the fiscal impact of a county cap.
