The worker trapped when a cesspool he was digging collapsed in Huntington has died, Suffolk police say.

Police say the worker was part of a crew installing a new cesspool at 2 Beech Place when the ground gave way around 12:50 p.m.

Rescuers spent hours trying to rescue him after he became trapped. They recovered the body of 59-year-old Edward Sinnott, of Huntington, around 7 p.m. A physician's assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner pronounced him dead at the scene.

Town officials say the victim worked for Antorino & Sons in Huntington. 

News 12 was told that a second worker was near the hole as the cesspool collapsed, but was able to grab onto a piece of equipment and make his way out.

Rescuers from both Suffolk and Nassau counties, the Huntington and Huntington Manor fire departments, officials from the town and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration as well as neighboring fire departments all responded to the scene.
