A woman was fatally struck by a car Wednesday night in Freeport, according to police.

Authorities say the woman was trying to cross Merrick Road near Henry Street when a Volkswagen hit her. The driver remained at the scene.

The woman, whose name has yet to be released, suffered severe trauma to her head and body. She was rushed to a hospital and pronounced dead.
