In just a few months thousands of dollars in federal tax credits for energy efficient home improvements will expire, but there are still some incentives you can cash in on in 2026.
T.F. O'Brien says the state is still offering programs for qualifying home improvements, like installing an electric heat pump, or split air conditioning unit for your wall.
According to the New York State Research and Development Authority, residents can get up to $3,000 in rebates for efficient, emission-free systems.
PSEG offers incentives, too.
"Local utility companies like PSEG offer rebates for certain high efficiency heat pump units, similar type of equipment," said Patrick O'Brien, with T.F. O'Brien Heating and Cooling.
One of the largest federal tax incentives going away is for buying solar panels, which is up to 30% of the total installation costs.
According to the New York Solar Energy Industries Association, New York state offers a tax credit of up to $5,000 for installing solar panels.
"There are still state and local incentives that'll be available if you miss out on the federal ones," said Jonathan Cohen, with the New York Solar Energy Industries Association.
The federal tax credits expire on Jan. 1.
