Nassau Police Marine Units say they will be working over the Fourth of July weekend to prevent tragedies similar to the Oyster Bay Harbor boat capsizing four years ago.
Three children were killed when a boat capsized on July 4, 2012 due to overcrowding.
Officials say 27 people, including at least 10 children, were aboard a 34-foot Silverton cruiser on the way back from a fireworks display.
Sgt. Scott Amberman is urging boaters not to overload their vessels while reveling in firework displays. He also says boaters should provide flotation devices for their passengers.
Family members of the deceased children, cousins David Aureliano and Harlie Treanor, and family friend Victoria Gaines, are waiting for Congress to act on a bill that would require most boat manufacturers to post a maximum occupancy on their vessels.
