Police say a man who was driving without a license struck and killed a woman in Huntington Station Sunday evening.
Authorities say Jorge Granados, 25, was driving on New York Avenue near Lowndes Avenue when he struck 47-year-old Ena Flores, of Huntington Station.
Flores, a mother of four, was pronounced dead.
Police say Granados did not have a driver's license and is being charged with unlicensed operation of a vehicle.
Distraught loved ones say Flores had walked to a Kmart store near her house to pick up dog food when she was hit. They became concerned when she didn't return for two hours.
"She was an amazing lady," says family friend Stephany Rubio. "She didn't deserve that."
The pain and anguish that Flores' family is going through is something Dawn Nappi knows all too well. Her 14-year-old daughter, Angelica, was fatally struck by an unlicensed driver eight years ago.
Since then, Nappi has fought for state approval of Angelica's Law, which would increase the penalty for unlicensed drivers involved in fatal crashes from a misdemeanor to a felony.
"This happens way too much and if people can get away with killing people, not having a license while on the road, why do we even bother having a driver's license?" Nappi says. "Where is the penalty?"
Angelica's Law passed in the state Senate, but stalled in the Assembly. The Nappi family plans to re-introduce the bill in January.
No one answered the door to comment Monday at Granados' Huntington Station home.
