Nassau police say that there have been 117 thefts of tires and rims reported countywide in the last five months.
A total of 26 thefts have been reported since last month.
Detective Lt. Richard Lebrun says thieves are stealing the rims and tires to make a profit.
"The tires can be $100 each and the rims on a lot of these vehicles could be $200 each," says Lebrun.
Police say thieves are typically targeting Mercedes Benz, Honda and Toyota vehicles.
Authorities say the most recent thefts have happened overnight in Valley Stream and Elmont areas during periods of heavy rain or snowstorms.
Police are urging residents to keep their vehicles in well-lit driveways and to purchase wheel locks.
