Police say a Hempstead teen was arrested Tuesday night after leading officers on a chase in a stolen car.
Hempstead police say officers spotted 18-year-old Laron Watts driving a Jaguar SUV that was reported stolen. They say Watts then crashed the SUV into a squad car, injuring an officer, and took off on foot.
Authorities say Watts then broke into a home on Stevens Avenue while a young woman was inside, and prevented her from leaving.
Police say that while Watts was inside the home, he was watching police search the neighborhood for him and decided to run out of a side door. After a short foot pursuit, they were able to take Watts into custody.
Watts was charged with a variety of crimes, including burglary, assault and unlawful imprisonment.
He was also arraigned on two unrelated cases of identity theft for allegedly using stolen credit cards.
According to public records, Watts has been arrested seven other times. News 12 reported on a similar incident in May 2017 in which Watts was also accused of crashing a stolen car and running off.
Watts was held on $150,000 bail. He's due back in court on Monday.
