Police swarmed a house in New Cassel after two armed men forced their way into a Third Avenue home, according to authorities.
Police say two males rang the bell and forced themselves inside when a resident answered the door.
Both brandished handguns, according to officials. The men forced a woman, two children under 13 years old and two tenants upstairs and demanded money, police say.
At some point, one of the men fired a bullet that struck a window frame, according to police.
The woman's husband came home during the invasion, police say, and the men demanded money from him as well. He complied, and they fled.
The husband armed himself with a rifle the family kept in the house and tried to chase the suspects down the street, but they escaped. Police say he discharged the rifle during the chase.
The husband is a builder and landlord, and police say the motive is related to one of his businesses.
Police described the suspects as 6-foot-tall and 5-foot-tall Hispanic men. They released a sketch of the taller man and say the other was wearing a ski mask. They allegedly stole an undisclosed amount of cash and jewelry.
Police are asking anyone with information on the crime to call Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
