A Bellmore man accused of running down a teen on his bike and never stopping faced a judge today.
Police say Edward Drexel, 60, of Bellmore, was arrested in the hit-and-run. Drexel appeared before a judge this morning for arraignment.
Detectives say a 14-year-old bicyclist was in the crosswalk attempting to travel westbound at the intersection of Saw Mill Road and Jerusalem Avenue when he was struck by Drexel's white-colored van. The incident happened on Aug. 1 around 10 a.m.
The teen was transported to a hospital where he was treated for a fracture, lacerations and bruising.
Prosecutors say Drexel took the van to a repair shop to fix the vehicle and conceal the damage.
Drexel is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury and tampering with physical evidence. Drexel surrendered to police and signed a confession, according to his lawyer.
Drexel is due back in court on Aug. 10.
