A Stony Brook University student died after a night of drinking, police say.
Nicholas Holt, 18, was at an off-campus party on April 24 and died at Mather Hospital five days later, according to investigators. Holt was a member of the Alpha Phi Delta fraternity.
Alpha Phi Delta's national organization has since suspended the Stony Brook chapter saying it has a "long-standing policy that forbids underage drinking."
The university says Alpha Phi Delta has been suspended on its campus since May 2015, but a spokesperson declined to say why.
Poquott residents near Oak Street and Walnut Avenue say several fraternity members rent a house there. Police are looking into whether anyone at the house violated the social host law by providing alcohol to underage teens.
Police say there is no evidence of hazing or forced drinking.
Some students at Stony Brook say excessive underage drinking off campus is common.
"No one is there to say, 'OK, that's enough,'" says Maria Lopez. "Everyone's drunk."
