Police are stepping up their tactics to catch hit-and-run drivers.

After a string of hit-and-run DWIs, officials formed the Vehicular Crimes Unit in cooperation with the Suffolk District Attorney's Office.

The team responds to the actual scene of the crash, scrapping up every bit of evidence possible. Through forensic analysis, they can track the tiniest car part back to a make and model of a certain car.

Once police know the make and model of the car, they then search DMV records and find out who owns that type of car. Then, they go door-to-door until they find the actual vehicle in the crash.
