Police are stepping up patrols this weekend for "Saturation Saturday" and in preparation for the Labor Day holiday.
Saturation Saturday is an nationwide initiative that takes place on the Saturday before Labor Day weekend to deter drunk driving.
The initiative will put extra officers on the roads and step up DWI checkpoints across Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Officers say they see a lot more drunk drivers on the road this time of year, with college students back on campus and the holiday weekend.
The organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving is reminding motorists not to get behind the wheel when impaired.
Police say there is no excuse to drink and drive. They urge drivers to use a designated driver, public transportation, taxis or a ride-share app to get home safe.
