Police are trying to track down the knife-wielding intruder who broke into a Massapequa Park home, stabbed a young man and scuffled with the victim's mother.
Investigators say the home invasion happened around 5:30 a.m. Sunday on May Place.
Olga Hernandez says her 22-year-old son woke up to a loud noise. He got up and walked around outside, but came back in when he didn't see anything. That's when she says he spotted someone walking up the stairs.
The attacker had entered the home through an unlocked side door. Hernandez’s son attempted to fight off the suspect, who was holding a crowbar and a large knife.
Hernandez says she then jumped into the fight to try to protect her son.
"I tried to pull him away, off my son, because he had him in a headlock and a knife in one hand. I can't do much, but I tried," she says. "I tried to pull him off and he punched me… Then he took my son and swung him out onto the lawn, and got up and walked away."
Hernandez suffered bruises and cuts. Her son was hospitalized with stab wounds and cuts to his hands.
Police are urging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
