Police say an off-duty Westhampton Beach policeman is recovering from the bumps and bruises he sustained after chasing a suspect who hit a cyclist then tried to flee in a speeding car.
The cyclist was riding on County Road 83 in Coram when police say he was mowed down by Oscar Jandres, a national from El Salvador. Police say Jandres is a felon who was deported from Miami in 1999. Police officer Joe Pesapane saw the accident and rushed after the fleeing motorist, who Pesapane says was going close to 90 mph.
Jandres is under arrest. The cyclist was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was treated for a head laceration and released.
