Police: Riverhead man set girlfriend on fire in tent
Police say a 30-year old man from Riverhead intentionally set his girlfriend on fire after an argument Wednesday night.
Police say Ryan Osborne and his girlfriend had a fight earlier in the day and that she was staying in a tent in a wooded area behind his house on Forge Road.
According to authorities, Osborne returned at night when she was sleeping and set her and the tent on fire. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m.
Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller says "an accelerant was used in this case."
The fire quickly spread to the nearby trees. The woman managed to survive with burns to her legs, face and hands. Police say the victim had a previous order of protection against Osborne.
On his Facebook page, Osborne describes himself by saying he's "a man that is learning from his past to have a brighter future. Positive vibes, nothing but love."
He was arraigned on assault and arson charges Thursday. Bail was set at $25,000.
