A large crash on westbound Sunrise Highway near Oakdale-Bohemia Road brought traffic to a complete standstill Saturday evening causing disruptions on local roads.
The crash resulted in at least one serious injury, according to police.
The crash was within 100 feet of an on-ramp and across from the Suffolk County Water Authority.
There was a large police presence in the area as authorities investigated the incident.
The highway closure forced drivers to detour onto smaller roads, causing gridlock and congestion in nearby neighborhoods.
Local residents voiced their concerns about safety on the busy roadway, "Yes, it happens constantly—all the overdevelopment, the stores—it’s just becoming like the Belt Parkway," Tom Coffey said.
