A Wading River mom is accused of leaving her two young children, one of which is handicapped, unattended in a car for nearly an hour.
Lynn Hoenig, 40, allegedly left her 2-year-old twins in the car while she shopped at Costco in Holbrook. One of the young children has Down syndrome
Police say the twins were locked in a running car with the windows closed. Officer John Pitka broke the front right window of the vehicle to let the children out.
Hoenig was arrested when she returned to her car and charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
"It doesn't take too much to harm the kids," says Inspector Aristides Mojica, of the Suffolk County Police Department.
The children were taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center for evaluation. They have been released to their father. Child Protective Services is being notified.
