Police say a man has been arrested for allegedly stealing air conditioner parts from rooftop units at various locations in Hempstead.
Nassau police say they were called to the Salvation Army location on Front Street in Hempstead Saturday afternoon. They found 32-year-old Joseph Smith, of Hempstead, on the roof. They said Smith ran to avoid officers, but was eventually arrested after an extensive search.
Authorities say an investigation revealed that Smith allegedly stole HVAC parts from at least five other rooftops at locations around Hempstead. The incidents dated back to April 4, police say.
Smith has been charged with five counts of second-degree grand larceny, plus criminal mischief and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
