A man who allegedly broke into a Rockville Centre church at least three times faced a judge Thursday.
Police say surveillance video from August shows 30-year-old Alexander Barone prying open the donation box at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre, Long Island's largest cathedral.
They say the Queens man stole cash from the house of worship on Aug. 20 and again on Aug. 27. During those burglaries, church officials told News 12 that he caused hundreds of dollars in damages. During the second encounter, police say he entered through a locked gate.
Police say Barone went back to the cathedral for a third time on Jan. 30 and took money from that donation box once again.
Investigators say Barone was recently arrested by Long Beach police on a drug possession warrant. They say that's when they discovered he was the person wanted for the three break-ins.
Prosecutors say Barone has five prior convictions -- one misdemeanor and four violations.
Barone is facing several charges, including three counts of burglary and possession of a controlled substance. He was released from court with an ankle monitor.
He is due back in court Feb. 27.
