36-year-old accused of assaulting teen during basketball game

School officials say what started as a skirmish between two basketball players became a full-blown brawl at a game at Half Hollow Hills High School West.

Video shows one parent running across the court to join in the fight.

Comsewogue schools tells News 12 the parent from Half Hollow Hills West assaulted a player on Comsewogue.

Suffolk police say 36-year-old Jeffery Vernot, from Wheatley Heights, punched the 15-year-old.

Vernot was issued an appearance ticket and charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

News 12 reached out to the Half Hollow Hills and Comsewogue school districts for comment. The superintendent of Comsewogue said in a statement that they are conducting their own internal investigation. The Half Hollow Hills superintendent says they are cooperating with police.

Section XI Athletics, which oversees high school sports in Suffolk, tells News 12 all students and adults involved in the incident will be banned from at least two games.

The Suffolk District Attorney's Office says Jeffery Vernot will face a judge on Jan. 30.
