A man is missing and another is hospitalized with hypothermia following a canoe trip on South Oyster Bay.
Suffolk County police say two men from Copiague went out around 4:30 p.m. Sunday from Tanner Park.
At around 1:55 a.m., a family member called 911 saying 23-year-old Amadeusz Lacz and 25-year-old Przemyslaw Krysiak had not returned home.
Marine Bureau officers started a search and spotted Lacz on a piece of land out in the water and rescued him.
He was taken to the hospital suffering from hypothermia.
Lacz's mother said her son is recovering and that the canoe was owned by her son's friend.
"They must be really going through it - it's really sad," says Meg Sharp.
Some at Tanner Park say the water could have been treacherous later in the day with the sun setting earlier.
"It's crazy out here - I've actually went out on a day when it was nice and all of a sudden…it got hectic with the tidal change," says David Jack of Copiague. "...There will be waves, rouge waves if you are in a canoe."
It's not clear if either of the two men were experienced boaters or had life jackets on when they were out on the water.
