Nassau police say a man was killed and another was wounded during a shooting in a residential area in Hempstead Friday morning.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. on Wellesley Street. The shooting happened behind a house where 12-year-old Dejah Joyner was fatally struck by a stray bullet three years ago.
Both victims were hospitalized. One suffered injuries not considered life-threatening, but the other was pronounced dead at 11:28 a.m.
The names of the victims have not yet been released.
Police wouldn't share details of what led to the shooting. Investigators could be seen combing the scene for shell casings and other evidence.
A witness tells News 12 that she heard multiple gunshots and saw a possible shooter run off. Police presence was still heavy into the evening hours after the double shooting.
"The homicide squad and the Hempstead Village police are looking for one individual at least," said Nassau Police Detective Lt. Richard Lebrun.
News 12 reported last week that a 23-year-old man was shot in broad daylight multiple times at nearby Dartmouth Street and Stewart Avenue. Police have not said if any arrests were made in that case.
News 12 asked Hempstead Village Police Chief Richard Holland what the department is doing to keep the public safe after the second fatal shooting in a week.
"We're putting added patrol out on all posts," said Holland. "We have more undercover unmarked vehicles out. We're working closely with Nassau County."
Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
