A Deer Park man is fighting for his life after being viciously beaten during a carjacking.
Relatives say 65-year-old Donald, who was already disabled, is in critical condition following the violent assault. He is currently on a ventilator and in a coma at South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore.
According to Suffolk County police, the attack happened at around 8:30 p.m. Monday on Brook Avenue in Deer Park.
The incident took place near the victim’s townhouse complex.
“It’s just been one hurdle after another, and he was just trying to get along with his life when these people did this to him,” said the victim’s brother. Donald, who uses a wheelchair after losing one leg, was left severely injured by two attackers who stole his car. The family says the assailants left him to die after stomping on him and taking everything he had.
A neighbor, Joycelyn Grant, described the harrowing scene as emergency workers took Donald to the hospital.
"Oh God, that's so sad. He didn’t look too good when he left to go to the hospital last night," she recalled.
At this time, police have not identified the attackers or determined whether Donald was specifically targeted. The investigation into the brutal assault is ongoing.
“I just hope they catch them and I hope they rot,” said the victim’s brother, who expressed both his grief and frustration over the senseless violence.
