Nassau County police say they arrested a New Hyde Park man on Saturday for attempting to murder his parents.
They say 24-year-old Joshua Wilck entered his parents’ bedroom and began assaulting his mother, 64, and father, 60, with a knife in their Cherrywood Drive home on Saturday night.
Wilck continued to assault them as they left the house. While outside, he put his arms around one of the victim’s necks and responding officers finally removed Wilck from the victim and arrested him, according to detectives.
Neighbors told News 12 the father ran nearby doorbells asking for someone to call 911.
“It’s surprising,” said New Hyde Park resident Karishma Tank. “You never really hear about stories like that. It’s a quiet neighborhood. People get along with each other.”
A neighbor who did not want to go on camera spoke exclusively with News 12 and said she went to the same high school as Wilck. She said she didn’t know him personally.
"I don’t know what he’s going through mentally or whatever it is, but it’s very scary and I hope his family finds guidance throughout this. I hope his parents are OK,” she said.
Police added both victims sustained severe lacerations and were taken to the hospital. They were listed in critical but stable condition as of Sunday night.
Wilck is charged with attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree, criminal obstruction of breathing, aggravated criminal contempt, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and resisting arrest.
Wilck is expected to be arraigned on Feb. 26.
