Authorities have found some of the remains of a Northport pilot killed when his vintage plane crashed into the Atlantic Sunday.
Robert Baranaskas was practicing stunts in his World War II-era Curtiss P-40 Warhawk for an air show Sunday afternoon when the plane went down 300 yards off the beach at Smith Point County Park.
Baranaskas, 61, and his son kept their planes at Brookhaven Calabro Airport, where flags are being hung at half staff. Jim Falbo, a maintenance mechanic there, says Baranaskas was a great man and a great father who shared a love of war planes with his son Chris. Chris Baranaskas witnessed the crash, as he was acting as his father?s spotter from the ground.
The Northport man started Warbirds over Long Island, an organization devoted to flying and celebrating vintage planes. The search was postponed Monday because of bad weather, but Suffolk County police later confirmed that some remains of the pilot were recovered.
