The Long Island University community is mourning the loss of their football team's starting quarterback, who was fatally stabbed over the weekend in Tennessee.

According to police, 22-year-old Clayton Beathard was stabbed to death outside the Dogwood Bar and Grill in Nashville early Saturday morning. Another man was also killed, and a third person was injured.

No arrests have been made, but authorities in Nashville have released a picture of a man who is wanted for questioning.

According to the football team's website, Beathard transferred to LIU Post in January. He played seven games in the fall before he was sidelined due to injury.

A Tennessee native, Beathard was a junior who majored in sports management. He was also the grandson of hall of fame NFL Exectutive Bobby Beathard and the brother of San Francisco 49ers quarterback CJ Beathard.

The 49ers played on Saturday night -- less than 24 hours after the killing -- and dedicated the game to their grieving teammate and his family.

The family issued a statement that said in part, "Clay was an amazing, big and soft-hearted human being with an undeniable love for the Lord. He had his family's, friends' and teammates' backs even to a fault.”

The university says grief counselors will be on hand at the school's Center for Healthy Living. Support for students is also available over the phone, at 516-299-3468.
