Suffolk police say a kayaker in distress was rescued in the Long Island Sound today, after being located by a helicopter and picked up by a Coast Guard vessel.
Police say a 60-year-old Connecticut woman was kayaking in the waters north of Roanoke Point in the town of Riverhead when her kayak tipped over. Police say the woman made a radio notification and activated a position beacon.
The woman was spotted about 20 minutes later by a police helicopter. She was hanging onto her kayak and was wearing a life jacket, police say.
The helicopter crew directed a police boat and a Coast Guard vessel to the kayaker's location. She was taken by the Coast Guard to their New Haven station for a medical evaluation.
