Police say a Queens woman has been arrested for attempted murder of an elderly woman inside her Massapequa home.
Officials identified the suspect as Amanda Fraser, 23, of South Richmond Hills, Queens. Fraser has been charged with one count of second-degree attempted murder.
Nassau County police said they responded to 9 Bay Dr. around 8 a.m. Wednesday, after receiving a call for a welfare check at the home.
That's where they found an unidentified 84-year-old woman with a puncture wound to her chest, officials said. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment. She is currently listed in serious critical condition.
Nassau County police declined to say more about the suspect's relationship to the victim, but according to the woman's son, security cameras inside the home showed the victim's home health aide getting into his mother's bed and stabbing the elderly woman while she slept.
People in the community reacted to the son's claims.
"They have to be checked out thoroughly because you're depending on helping one of your loved ones, you know, keep them as safe and well as possible," Massapequa Park resident Tony Carniglia said.
"They take advantage," Massapequa resident Billy Arnold said. "It's a shame that as you get older, it comes to this."
Detectives spent hours combing the home and property for evidence throughout Wednesday. They were seen removing bags from inside the home and inspecting how a grey Dodge sedan ended up on the front lawn.
Nassau County police declined to say if Fraser had driven the car onto the property, who the car belonged to or how the vehicle got there in the first place.
The incident prompted a brief lockout on Wednesday afternoon at two nearby schools, including Birch Lane Elementary School and Massapequa High School.
Nassau County police said Fraser will be arraigned when medically practical, indicating she suffered some sort of injuries, but officials declined to say what type, where she's being treated or when she was hurt.
Nassau County police say the investigation is ongoing.
Detectives are asking for anyone with information to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS or call 911.
