Police say a man armed with a knife slashed a 75-year-old woman before punching her 90-year-old husband in the chest and raiding their home.
Suffolk police say it happened around 11:30 p.m. Thursday on Roosevelt Avenue in Greenlawn.

The woman answered a knock at the door and the suspect forced his way inside, according to police.

“He was armed with what's described as a small knife,” says Suffolk Police Chief Stuart Cameron. “He slashed the wife in the hand and the arm.”

Police say the suspect went to the upstairs bedroom where he punched the woman's 90-year-old husband several times in the chest and threw him to the ground before taking off with cash and credit cards.

Neighbors say the male victim is the pastor at a church a few blocks away and that his life has been dedicated to helping others.
“He's been an icon in the neighborhood,” says Marian Joseph, of Greenlawn. “This would be like the last person that you would ever think that would get robbed.”
The victims were taken to a hospital, and police say they're expected to recover.
Cameron says the couple may have been targeted by their attacker.
“This is a 90-year-old and 75-year-old person,” says Cameron. “It's really shocking and disturbing to me that someone would push their way into a house and assault these people.”

Police are offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call Suffolk Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
