Police are in a standoff Friday with a gunman at a home in Hempstead. Police say they arrived at the home on Westbury Boulevard and Harvard Street shortly before midnight to make an arrest for a prior domestic dispute case. They say a man known as "Dante" fired shots when they arrived, but no officers were hurt. Police say they do not believe any officers returned fire.Officials say they are still trying to get the man to pick up the phone to communicate with them. So far, they have had to rely on police scanners to try to get him to leave the house safely. Police say they believe he is the only person in the house.The Jackson Main Elementary School on Jackson Street is closed Friday due to the standoff.
