Police say a 6-year-old female died early Monday in a crash caused by an 18-year-old driving drunk in West Hempstead.
A total of five people were also injured in the two-car collision, police say.
A 2005 Nissan SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike near the intersection of Westminster Road at 2:21 a.m. when it struck a parked car, police say.
The victim's 26-year-old mother was injured by debris caused by the crash. Her other 5-year-old daughter also suffered multiple internal injuries and is in stable condition.
A 17-year-old female cousin of the family was injured by debris.
Homicide Squad detectives identified the deceased victim as Katerine Vanegas-Hernandez, of West Hempstead.
Police say the 18-year-old driver was arrested at the scene for blowing a level of intoxication twice the legal limit. He was taken to a hospital for his injuries.
The suspect is facing charges including manslaughter in the second degree, DWI and operating without a license, among other charges.
