Police: Helicopter makes 'controlled landing' near Jones Beach

A helicopter made an emergency landing near Jones Beach, leaving one person injured Wednesday afternoon.
State officials say the helicopter went down in a marsh area south of the intersection of Meadowbrook Parkway and Loop Parkway.
The helicopter landed in about a foot of water, according to police.
The Coast Guard says a boater was the first person at the scene.
"My understanding is a good Samaritan, the identity of which I'm not currently aware of, was the first on scene and actually grounded their boat in order to do whatever they could to get off the marsh safely," says Chief Petty Officer David Turner.
The helicopter involved in Wednesday's incident.
A massive effort went into helping complete the rescue, including assistance from the Merrick and Wantagh fire departments, Nassau County Marine Bureau, Nassau County Marine Aviation and the Coast Guard.
The pilot was brought back to the Jones Beach Coast Guard station.
Nassau police say the person suffered minor injuries and is being treated at Nassau University Medical Center.
"Any kind of aircraft emergency, it's always a good thing and a blessing when a person manages to walk away unscathed," says Turner.
Conditions were very foggy on the South Shore around the time the landing occurred.
