Nassau police halted scammers from swindling a 69-year-old Rockville Centre woman out of thousands of dollars.
Police say Pedro Ramon Martinez Martinez and Wayne Ibarra-Hernandez, of Florida, called the woman, claiming her grandson was under arrest. Authorities say the two suspects told the woman she needed to give them $17,000 to bail him out. The woman then called police.
Detectives say the pair sent an Uber to retrieve the money -- a method they say should be looked into.
"We're also advising Uber you have a bad policy. It's not going to work. Your Uber drivers are going to be used to carry drugs and never mind the victims, you're putting them in danger," says Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder.
Both men are facing charges.
