A man shot himself in a West Islip home nearly 15 hours after killing a woman and sexually abusing a child, Suffolk police say. Police say 50-year-old Phillip Zagarella, of Lindenhurst, visited family friend Joanna White, 59, at 412 Kime Ave. late Sunday night. Zagarella looked after one of White's grandchildren while she went out to pick up a second grandchild. When White returned, police say she and Zagarella got into a confrontation that ended with him cutting White's throat.
White's daughter approached the home after midnight and saw White's body lying in the garage. After initially attempting to enter the house to call 911, she encountered Zagarella and managed to flee. Police say they received the woman's call around 12:30 a.m. from a neighbor's house. Officials say the children were released around 3 a.m., but not before one of them was sexually abused. Police say White's daughter and grandchildren were taken to an undisclosed location.
Negotiators attempted to convince Zagarella, who worked in the construction business with the ex-husband of White's daughter, to surrender peacefully for about 15 hours. Police say the suspect was a recovering alcoholic, who friends say recently began drinking heavily again. Zagarella was apparently drunk at the time of the incident, and police say he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
