Massaro won the first-ever "WWE Diva Search" in 2005, competed in two WrestleMania events, was a contestant on "Survivor" and was a Playboy cover model. She was also grateful for her fans, tweeting this week that she was working to respond to fan mail.
Massaro also worked as a DJ for Long Island radio station 94.3 The Shark.
"Ashley was no ego whatsoever," says DJ Brian Orlando. "She asked every question under the sun, she constantly was asking, 'Did I do OK? Was I OK? Can I do better?' This is somebody that's been all over the world, on TV, on the cover of Playboy magazine, every single shift -- 'What can I do to be better?' Every time."
Massaro leaves behind an 18-year-old daughter.
WWE Hall of Famer and fellow Long Islander Mick Foley tweeted: "This is just awful news - Ashley Massaro is gone. She was only 39. She lived in the same town as me...I loved seeing her around. She was always so nice...and now she's gone."
A memorial for Massaro was posted on the WWE website.
