An East Meadow man was arraigned on a slew of charges after allegedly assaulting a woman and punching a police officer during an apparent unprovoked attack.

Prosecutors say the 36-year-old female victim was driving her minivan on Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when James Martins, 34, threw a cinder block at her vehicle.

After the woman pulled over at a BP gas station and questioned Martin's behavior, police say he punched her in the face while she was on her phone calling 911. Her 3-year-old daughter was in the back seat.

Police say the victim fell to the ground and Martins took her phone. He then punched her a dozen times in the head and face, leading her to lose consciousness.

Witness Tom Doran says Martins ran from the scene after people in the area began yelling in his direction.

“I said ‘I'm not going to let him get away with it,’” Doran told News 12.

Doran says he took off after Martins and flagged down police.

Police say Martins resisted arrest, tearing off one officer's badge and hitting him in the face. News 12 was told a civilian helped officers subdue Martins.

Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder says Martins may have been “intoxicated” and may have a “cognitive disorder.”

Martins is facing a slew of charges, including assault, robbery and endangering the welfare of a child.

The woman is being treated at a hospital for a concussion and multiple cuts and bruises to her head and face. The male officer was also taken to the hospital with a head injury.
