Police say an alleged drunken driver left his BMW at the scene of a crash he caused on Sunrise Highway and fled on foot.
State police say the crash happened around 4:30 a.m. Sunday in the eastbound lanes of the highway near Speonk-Riverhead Road in Speonk.
The BMW, driven by 26-year-old Peter Ethier, of Westhampton Beach, crashed into a 2002 Ford vehicle, causing the Ford to roll over, police say. Ethier then allegedly fled on foot.
All three people in the Ford were injured. A passenger in the front seat was critically hurt and was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital. The driver and a passenger in the rear seat suffered leg injuries and were taken to Brookhaven Hospital. The occupants of the Ford were not identifed.
Police say they located Ethier at his home and took him into custody. He is being charged with DWI, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, operating a vehicle without an interlock device and traffic violations.
Other charges are pending, police say.
Police say Ethier was traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash.
