The driver who plowed through the front of a Baldwin church will now face criminal charges after surrendering nearly eight hours after the crash.
Police say Sherif Wheeler, of Baldwin, lost control of the car at 4:25 a.m. Sunday, crashed into the Second Baptist Church on Grand Avenue and injured his passenger.
Wheeler, 21, turned himself in around 1 p.m. yesterday and is now in the hospital along with his passenger. Wheeler was allegedly driving with a suspended license.
Police say Wheeler was arrested last September after allegedly driving without a license, not having insurance, an inspection, and for reckless driving.
Wheeler is now charged with leaving the scene and unlicensed driving.
The church says it is now dealing with about $100,000 damage.
