Police have arrested the parents of 4-year-old Jennifer Shafiq, whose remains were found in a shallow grave in Manorville 10 years ago.
Police say Shafiq was beaten and tortured by her parents, Queens residents Khairual Abdul and Parmjit Singh, for six months before her lifeless body was dumped in the woods east of exit 70 on the Long Island Expressway in 1990. Detectives say Jennifer was a month old when she was placed in foster care, but her parents got her back three and a half years later. Her skeleton was found six years after her murder.
Authorities say Jennifer?s parents, who have been living Sacramento, California, are now estranged and having domestic problems. California police say Singh was arrested last May on an unrelated charge and told them his wife had murdered their daughter 16 years ago. Singh?s accusation was then passed on to Suffolk police, who were able to obtain the name, birth certificate, medical records and DNA of the couple?s daughter. Investigators then traced the shirt found on the skeleton to Jennifer?s foster mother, whom she called Grandma. The shirt read, "My heart belongs to Grandma."
Abdul is charged with second-degree murder and Singh is charged with hindering prosecution. Both are awaiting extradition to Suffolk County.
