A Copiague man allegedly set his house on fire and threatened police officers with a shotgun after a physical altercation with his father Sunday.
Police say they responded to the house on South Great Neck Road after they received a call about a fight between a father and son around 8 p.m. Police say when they arrived, they confronted 23-year-old William Kester on the lawn. He then went inside the home, returned with a shotgun and threatened police, according to officials.
After emerging from the house, police say Kester claimed there was a bomb inside. Police say that claim was unfounded, but Kester did set fire to his parents? bedroom.
Police were able to subdue Kester only after firing bean bags at him. He faces charges of menacing a police officer, assault and arson. He is due to be arraigned Tuesday.
Neighbors say Kester was distraught over the recent death of a friend, but police would not confirm that story. They say they?re grateful because the situation could have ended even more tragically.
