Police say the driver of a party bus has been charged after 40 drunk teens were found at a rest area on Sunrise Highway in Hampton Bays.
Police arrested Luis Guevara-Henriquz at around 9:30 p.m. Monday.
Police say they found more than 100 beer cans and several bottles of hard liquor on the bus. The bus was going from Garden City to Montauk.
News 12 Long Island has learned the students, mostly from Sewanhaka School District, hired the bus for their junior prom last month. However, due to mechanical problems with the vehicle, they rescheduled their bus trip for Monday night. According to Newsday, police say the teens had no intention of getting off the bus during the trip to Montauk.
Coachman Luxury Transport claims that Guevara-Henriquz was the one who called police. Police say that's not the case.
All the youths were turned over to their relatives.
Investigators are working to determine if parents provided the alcohol to the teens. More charges may be filed.
