Video obtained exclusively by News 12 shows the moment a vehicle was stolen with a sleeping child in the back seat.

Exclusive video of car being stolen:

It happened at around 11 p.m. on Christmas. Police say the child’s mother had gone into a convenience store on East Main Street in Riverhead and left the vehicle unlocked and running.

Video shows the suspected thief exiting a gray sedan and stealing the Ford Fusion.

The vehicle was found abandoned in Flanders, outside Phillips Avenue Elementary School. The child was still sleeping and was not harmed.

The car thief is still on the loose. Police arrested the mother and charged her with endangering the welfare of a child.
