A Rocky Point man has been arrested for allegedly attacking a 7-Eleven clerk during a robbery attempt.
Police say Paul Mauro, 31, was the suspect who punched an employee at 1 a.m. on Feb. 26 at the store on Route 112 in Coram. The 53-year-old clerk then hit his head and was knocked unconscious.
That's when Mauro allegedly stole cigarettes and $200 from the register and fled the scene.
Investigators say the suspect was seen in a clear surveillance image.
As he was being led out of the police station Saturday morning, Mauro told News 12's Kevin Vesey that he was sorry for what he did. Asked if it was worth it for $200, he responded, "No, sir."
Mauro said the violent robbery was in order to feed a drug habit. He has one prior robbery conviction.
Mauro was held on $50,000 bail after his arraignment Saturday.
The victim was hospitalized, and his co-workers say he's still not back on the job.
