Suffolk County police arrested a man Monday in connection to a fatal stabbing that took place in the Hampton Bays Diner parking lot last month.
Police say 25-year-old Jermaine Holmes, of Riverhead, turned himself in for stabbing Calvin Butts to death after a fight outside the diner on May 24. Detective Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick, of the Suffolk County Police Department, says Butts was stabbed while attempting to assist someone in the parking lot during the fight. He says Holmes approached him from behind and stabbed him several times in the back.
Police say they don?t know what caused the fight, but the owners of the diner say the incident may have stemmed from an earlier altercation at a nearby club.
Holmes pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and is due back in court on June 30. He is being held without bail.
