Nassau police say a man armed with a gun surrendered following a standoff with officers in Hicksville.
The man, who is in his 40s, was in the parking lot of Dutch Lane Elementary School armed with a gun at around 2:30 p.m., police say. Authorities say the man was in distress and was threatening to kill himself.
Dutch Lane Elementary School was placed on lockdown, as was Holy Trinity High School. The lockdowns came at around dismissal time, prompting Dutch Lane to eventually use a modified dismissal process with police officers present.
The man eventually surrendered to the Bureau of Special Operations at around 5 p.m. and was taken to NUMC for an evaluation.
Sources tell News 12 the man is a Port Washington police officer.
Stewart Avenue was closed from Levittown Parkway to Route 106 in both directions during the standoff.
