Hazmat, arson and bomb squads were called in Friday morning when an active chemical lab was found in the garage of a Long beach home.

The discovery triggered a massive emergency response on the 300 block of West Beech Street from multiple state, local and county agencies.

Police say officers discovered the lab after responding to a call of a man passed out on the lawn of the home around 8 a.m. The man was taken to the hospital and his condition is unknown.

Authorities evacuated nearby homes and closed West Beech Street as a precaution.

Detective Lt. Stefan Chernaski, of the Long Beach Police Department, says there was an “active heat source” inside a detached garage on the property. He says that there “appeared to be chemicals that were cooking.”

Nassau County officials told News 12 that they were treating the equipment in the garage as a suspected drug lab. Long Beach police would not confirm that.

Agents from the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency were on site during the investigation.
