A bullet was found on the floor of a school bus Monday in the Riverhead Central School District, according police.
Police say a 7-year-old child arrived at Reilly Avenue Elementary School with a 22-caliber bullet in his possession.
The Riverhead Police Department investigated the incident and revealed the child brought it from his home.
Upon interviewing the parents, all weapons were safely secured in the home, and the child did not have access at any time.
Students and staff were not in danger at any time, police say.
The district and Riverhead Police Department say the bullet was brought to school staff immediately by a bus driver.
Acting Superintendent of Schools Dr. William Galati said in part, “The investigation is ongoing, and the safety and security of our students, faculty, staff and community remains our highest priority.”
