Police say they discovered 45 dogs inside a home in East Meadow Thursday afternoon.
Town of Hempstead officials boarded up and condemned the house, after 45 dogs were found living inside in deplorable conditions. Some of the animals will require surgery.
"It's very dirty in there," said Gary Rogers, of Nassau SPCA. "We found animals in closets, in cabinets, they're hiding, and they're in cages."
According to authorities, officers were responding to a home on Powers Avenue when they made the discovery.
The Nassau County Police Hazmat Unit was requested due to the strong odor.
Authorities said the Nassau SPCA and the Town of Hempstead Building Department were also on the scene to remove the animals and condemn the residence.
Howard Siegal, the resident's next door neighbor, said he is relieved the dogs are getting the help they need.
"The smell is brutal. There's fleas, there's ticks, there's rodents," said Siegal. "We've called for years for some assistance."
The elderly female resident was transported to NUMC to be evaluated. The Nassau SPCA said it'll be consulting with the district attorney about filing charges against the homeowner.
