A group of robbers invaded and burglarized a house inside a gated community while a mother and her baby were home, police say.
Authorities say the incident happened Friday afternoon at the Hunt Club in Jericho, when four robbers in a flower delivery van got through security at the front entrance.
Once inside the gated community, police say, the suspects forced their way into a home on Hunt Drive, where a woman lived with her infant daughter.
Police say the robbers - three men and a woman, all in their 20s - demanded money and jewelry, then duct-taped the woman and got away with the stolen goods. The mother and child were not hurt.
?We're very upset,? says local resident Lawrence Ruchman. ?It's supposed to be a gated community with protection, and it's kind of frightening.?
Some residents say trucks and maintenance workers constantly enter and leave the community without signing in, and it was only a matter of time before something like that happened.
?There are people who come for painting and for odd jobs here and there,? says Abdul Kahn. ?They should basically register them. They may be the guys who may be giving tips to people.?
Other neighbors, however, say that not even a gated community can be 100 percent safe these days.
?You're just as prone to outside intrusions just like any place else,? says Bob Keller.
Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
